The Counseling Process

Beginning therapy can feel like a big step. Whether you are navigating anxiety, relationship challenges, life transitions, grief, trauma, or simply feeling disconnected from yourself, counseling offers a space to slow down, reflect, and move toward healing.

While every person’s journey is unique, the counseling process generally unfolds in four stages…

Four Stages of Counseling

Counseling Stage 1

1. Complimentary 15-Minute Consultation

Before scheduling your first appointment, we will begin with a brief phone consultation. This is an opportunity for us to connect, discuss what brings you to counseling, and answer any questions you may have about the process.

Just as important, it allows us to determine whether we are a good fit for one another. The relationship between counselor and client is one of the most important factors in successful therapy, and finding the right connection matters.

2. The Beginning Phase: Creating a Foundation

Our first sessions are focused on getting to know you and your story.

Together, we will explore the experiences, relationships, strengths, and challenges that have shaped your life. We will also discuss your goals for counseling and what meaningful change would look like for you.

This phase is about creating a foundation of trust, safety, and understanding. Healing often begins when we feel truly seen and heard, and I strive to provide a space where you can show up exactly as you are.

3. The Working Phase: Deepening Insight and Creating Change

As our work together develops, we begin exploring the patterns, beliefs, emotions, and experiences that may be contributing to your current struggles.

Using evidence-based approaches tailored to your needs, we will work collaboratively to build new skills, increase self-awareness, process difficult experiences, and create lasting change.

This phase often includes both challenge and growth. There may be moments of discomfort as old wounds are explored, but there are also opportunities for healing, clarity, and discovering new ways of relating to yourself and others.

4. The Closing Phase: Moving Forward with Confidence

Therapy is not meant to last forever. As your goals are met and you begin feeling more confident in your ability to navigate life’s challenges, we will begin discussing the process of ending counseling.

Together, we will reflect on your progress, celebrate your growth, and identify the tools and insights that will continue to support you moving forward.

The goal is not for you to depend on therapy, but to leave with a deeper understanding of yourself, a life that feels more grounded and aligned, and confidence in your ability to continue your growth beyond the counseling room.

Counseling Stage 4

Every counseling experience is different. Some clients move through these phases quickly, while others benefit from a slower pace. We will work together to create a process that honors your needs, your goals, and your personal path toward healing.
